Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using a mineral nutrient solution, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite, coarse sand, and gravel or coconut husk.

  • The advantages to hydroponics include:
  • Faster, longer growth
  • Harvest labour reduced by 80%
  • Harvest time reduced, and by doing so achieves:
  • Decreases loss in weight gain
  • Eliminates weight loss from shock
  • Allows greater yield per plant
  • Provides optimum temperature for plant growth

Tuvalu has a challenging environment for agriculture, with arid salty soil and a water supply dependent on rain water. We knew standard hydroponic equipment wasn't going to be up to the challenges of operating reliably under the conditions so the team at Atoll Fresh decided to search for the most suitable equipment for the job. We definitely think we have found that with Autopot and the AQUAvalve technology. Due its incredible water efficiency and non-dependence on electricity to operate it has the simplicity, efficiency and reliability to deal with the unique conditions of growing in Tuvalu.

The team at AutoPot UK (www.autopot.co.uk) have been incredibly supportive of Atoll Fresh and our mission to use hydroponic technology to help the people of Tuvalu improve their access to fresh food and the good health that can bring, thanks guys!
